The Hungarian Railway Park of Budapest is the largest interactive railway museum in Central Europe. It was opened in 2000 on the site of the former Northern heating house.
The 70,000 m² Railway Museum has over 100 rail vehicles, including many rare locomotives. The rail stock showcases the development of the railway from the 1870s to the present. The park is constantly expanding and developing. For instance the garden railway has been operating since 2006.
From April to November, the museum awaits its visitors with all-day long activities. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, it offers several thematic and special programs every month for railway loving guests and families with small children.
The majority of the vehicles are still operating today, occasionally they can be viewed and driven during the park’s events. The vehicles regularly travel inland and abroad as nostalgic trains.
Truly a must-see sight of Budapest both for children and adults! It’s a fantastic opportunity for not only getting familiarized by the history of the railway, but for getting to know the less popular districts of Budapest and for experiencing some off-the-beaten track programs.
